What courses are available?

Professional Development Programme in Dementia Care

This programme is offered at Higher Education Levels 1 and 2.

Target audience

Professionals, carers or volunteers who want to learn about person centred dementia practice. The course is particularly suitable for students who have limited experience of formal study and/or who are unsure whether they want to undertake a diploma or degree course, but who, nevertheless, want to obtain university credits in this area.

Entry requirements

  • For entry at level 1, no formal qualifications are required for those over the age of 21.
  • For entry at level 1, students under 21 at the beginning of their studies will require a minimum of 120 points at GCE A level (or equivalent, e.g. NVQ level 3), to include at least one pass in health, life science or a social science related subject;
  • Applicants over 21 who have a relevant professional qualification (e.g. in Nursing, Occupational Therapy or Social Work) or NVQ level 3 will normally enter the programme at level 2;
  • Access to a practice area where dementia care is provided throughout the full period of your studies, either as part of your regular employment or on a voluntary basis.
  • Access to a computer that can browse the internet and has a word processing programme on it, and have computing skills commensurate with the demands of the course.
  • Organisational support for your studies, and be able to identify a mentor in the workplace.

Award

Students who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of achievement from the Alzheimer's Society and obtain 60 university credits which can then be used towards gaining a diploma or degree in Dementia Studies.
